Five years after the 173d Airborne Brigade was established, members of the HERD banded together to form the Sky Soldier Association. This Association was established in 1967 for the express purpose of camaraderie for Sky Soldiers and the building of a memorial to their fallen brothers. The Sky Soldier Association held its first reunion at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1968. |

The 173d Airborne Brigade was deactivated on 14 January 1972. With the deactivation of the Brigade, the Sky Soldier Association merged its membership into the newly organized Society of the 173d Airborne Brigade, which was on established 24 March 1973. On 4 October 1973 the official memorial for the 173d Airborne Brigade was dedicated at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The Society incorporated on 1 July 1983 as the Society of the 173d Airborne Brigade, Inc., as a 501(c) (19) tax exempt corporation.
With the Reactivation of the 173d Airborne Brigade, the society board of directors, voted in January 2006 to re-incorporated as a 501(c) (10) tax exempt corporation with the 173d Airborne Brigade Association Foundation, a Scholarship, Bereavement and support fund being a 501(c) (3) tax deductible program within the newly re-formed 173d Airborne Brigade Association. Memberships in the Society merged again to membership in the Association. |
